Nevus

Mix 2 – a lot better I reckon. Getting some new tunes from the excellent beatport helped as did getting a better grip on Ableton. Best of all was a masterclass in SECRETS OF THE TOP DJ’S from the excellent Korruptor. 90% sounded like the teacher in Peanuts but the 10% that did sink in was really helpful indeed. Cheers man :D Also thanks to Skweek and Jed for casting a critical ear. There’s some shit bits but overall I’m close to happy with it. Time to move on and do some more I reckon :)

I got a mixdepot account and you can download it from here. The download link is on the left of the page :)

The set list is:

  • Since You’re Gone – Sono
  • Stars In Your Head – Jerome Isma-Ae
  • Solar – Shonky
  • Overrun – Henrik B
  • Touched by God – Katcha
  • 06:16am – Liquid Soul
  • Nightwalker – Trentemoller
  • I Want Your Mind – Pig and Dan
  • Camera class tonight :D

Filed under: Misc — Gaz @ 6:49 pm

It’s called Babysteps on account of this is the first time I’ve actually tried to sync the tracks mixed together. Ableton’s doing the hard work to be fair :)

The set list is:

  • Stoppage Time – Guy Gerber
  • The Walk (Everything Mix) – The Cure
  • Wide Open – Futureshock
  • Timber – Coldcut
  • Chinese Burn (PVD Forbidden City Mix) – Curve
  • Stars In Your Head – Jerome Isma-Ae
  • Low Buddy – Phage, Daniel Drier
  • Girls – The Prodigy

But of a rum collection really but more a reflection of what non-DRM’d music files of a dancey nature in my iTunes library than an exercise in fantastic taste :D

Hectic Weekend (Again)

Filed under: Misc — Gaz @ 12:35 pm

Another one. As it was Suze’s birthday on Friday we whizzed off to Lymington in the New Forest to a swanky hotel for a nice meal and night away from the flat. Unfortunately I’d booked it via the internet and no mention was made of the restaurant’s rather staunch dress code. Wearing jeans meant we were persona non grata in the main restaurant and had to eat in the slightly more grotty brasserie. Still we had a nice time and were up chatting until around 4 in morning :)

Saturday night we went to the Fruit Bar in Southampton meeting up with Jon, Joy, Donna and Stuey. That was was messy and we ended up leaving Stuey and Donnas at around 5am. With a dirty big head ache. And then Sunday it was off to Ruislip to sort out our wedding rings with a lovely chap called Chris, then down to Park Royal to see Mum and George and the finally to Pompey to see Suze’s Mum and Rod. All with a filthy hangover.

That combined with last weeks ridiculously rambunctiousness stag do I’m now feeling slightly the worse for wear and am planning a nice sit in a bath chair, blanket over my knees and sucking a Werthers original for next weekend.

Also had a muck around with Ableton Live and started doing a mix. First one I’ve done where I’ve paid any attention to trying to match beats and tempo between tracks.

You can download it right here :D

Some Post Honeymoon Memories

Filed under: Misc — Gaz @ 12:17 pm

All chipper now. The hanging tiredness has gone and this morning porridge fixed the last remnants of post stag brokeness that run through Monday the same way KISS ME KWIK runs through piss poor pompey rock.

Reports of the weekend started rolling in yesterday and friends blogs started to resemble front line battle reports filed after the Somme . What do I remember? Not a lot of specifics to be honest, it was all a wash of excellence punctuated by a few hours fitful sleeping in a hotel as terrible and the weekend was truly wonderful. Jim Ross phoning Jon at 3am and saying he “was in the sea”. Mark’s monkey like alternation between clambering and micturating over a building site with amazing enthusiasm (I’d love to see Johnny Morris voice over a video of that). Both of these stand out for some reason. There’s a million other glittering incidents but they’re all merging into one big smile in my head.

fig(i) The Saville Hotel. Yes, the landlord really was watching Al Jazeera TV at the reception.

I do, however, remember having an incongruously vivid moment of clarity sat in the One Eyed Dog on Friday, somewhere near closing time, and thinking “I really do have some excellent friends”. Amazingly perceptive given state we were all in as it still holds true having now come out of the other side of the forrest like hangover.

Phew! V happy but if I’m being honest also glad I don’t have to do that again :D

And if you’re interested pictures of Suze’s equally excellent time can be found here :)

Ow!

Filed under: Misc — Gaz @ 9:00 pm

That’s the noise it’s making in my head. 4 hours sleep out of the past 37 and the 33 hours not in the land of nod were really really great. So good to see so many friends who managed to make it to my Stag Weekend in Pompey.

Too many fleeting images of rambunctiousness flickering through the minds eye to write down in this ow like state. There’s a few pictures here.

Bah!

Filed under: Misc — Gaz @ 8:43 am

That was an odd photography class last night. The tutor walks in, not wearing his usual works clothes, and says this:

Well I’ve some news first. They’ve told us today that we all need to reapply for our jobs and if we fail that interview we’ll be made redundant. Well I’ve had that interview and I haven’t been successful. In fact they told me I may as well go home but I’m doing this class first. You’ll be getting a new tutor from next week, I’m not sure who it is, but the college will be sending you all a letter about it.

Ow! And a real shame. From the 3 week we’ve had with him so far I think it’s fair to say he was doing a really good job, an opinion that seemed to be shared by the 2nd year student in our group who had Richard for his first year on the course.

You could see he was a bit upset but I was really impressed he gave us 3 hours of enthusiastic and interesting tutoring in what was obviously difficult circumstances. Hope our new bod is half as good.

This week we printed the negatives we spent last week developing. Long story short all of my pictures came out shit :D The negatives looked good to me but a sinking feeling started to creep in as the contact sheet started to appear from the photographic paper bathing in developer, everyone was hideously underexposed.

Yes it’s true “Bad workmen blame their tools” BUT I suspect there may be a problem with the 2nd hand SLR I bought a while a go. I know the developing was okay as my film was in the same tube as the rest of the class and some of their photos come out absolutely cracking. I’m sure I exposed the contact sheet properly as first go I’d mistakenly put someone else’s negatives in the contact holder along with mine, his looked ace. So I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with the exposure meter on the SLR.

It was saying the exposure was okay for quite high shutter speeds in lowish light on an ISO 125 film. I’m going to shoot a load more with the camera, making sure the camera is saying the exposure is tickety boo and get the film developed at the place I bought the camera in the first place. If they come out horribly underexposed as well I’ll know where the problem is :D

Thought to be honest it’s probably something I’ve done. Grumble :D

What was good was one the guys mentioning he had a flickr account so I’ve got his details and added him as a contact. His photos are really awesome. Some of the other students seemed interested in setting up accounts too so we should be able to set up a little electronic community for everyone :D
