Video Games

I used to work as a programmer in the games industry a long while ago. It was something I’d always wanted to do from an early age. I worked on quite few titles, from C64 oldies right up until Playstation 1.

Even though I now do a different job I still like to have a go from time to time at a game related project and in the last few years that’s mostly been converting other people’s code to work on the Mac. I love Mac’s me :D and switched a few years back after being an avid Windows user for many years.

Gridrunner ++

My first Mac game was a conversion of Jeff Minter’s Gridrunner++. It’s a fantastic game that’s great fun and really nicely balanced. My mate Guy wrote a great framework for the Mac called SPOOGE which was really helpful in getting things going. Along the way I also added a few extras including a super fast Turbo Nutter mode, doubling the games speed and online high score tables as well.

Jaguar Emulator

More recently I converted an Atari Jaguar emulator onto the Mac mostly so I could play the fantastic Tempest 2000 again. The original code was done by a fantastic chap called Dio who I met on the Llamasoft Forums and it was a pretty straightforward job.

It runs nice and quickly on a G5 or Intel Mac. I’ve a little tidying up before releasing the final version but it’s nearly there and I’m quite happy with it. This is also the 1st programmed I’ve compiled as a Universal Binary. After that it was pretty easy getting GR++ working as a UB too after some slight tinkering with the cryptography lib I used to get it compiling under GCC 4.0.

You can download the work in progress right here. You’ll also need the ROM for Tempest 2000 which you can find right here.
